An innovative aspect of the ADVANCE program is involvement of departments in strategic planning to address the following issues:

• Faculty Leave
• Tenure and promotion
• Recruitment

When policies are explicit and transparent, they reduce the stress on individual faculty member as well as the department as a whole by facilitating accommodation of both planned and unplanned absences. An established policy ensures that the burden of increased duties is distributed fairly, and includes appropriate elements of reciprocity.
